As I watched Noticias Univision, a Spanish newscast, I noticed it contained the news values presented in class.
For instance, proximity and human interest were present during the lead story of McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America, being converted into an alternative care center during the epidemic.
Although Noticias Univision touches upon news that occurred around the world, the story hits close to home since McCormick is in Chicago. In regards to human interest, mostly everyone is engaged because it concerns the Coronavirus, which people want to be up to date.
This story isn't the only one that contains the values discussed in class. When Jorge Ramos, the newscaster, mentions that medical supplies are running short in hospitals, it touches upon conflict, impact, and timeliness.
It contains conflict because, without the proper gear, doctors have a higher likelihood of contracting the virus. Furthermore, there have been nurses complaining about being forced to perform their jobs while reusing equipment.
The impact concerning the scarcity of gear is evident, with it mostly impacting doctors/nurses. Concerning timeliness, anything regarding the Coronavirus is timeliness because people are getting diagnosed nearly every day, and an abundance of people are dying. Overall, it’s a trending topic around the world.
In summary, there were several other stories in the newscast that had news values, and although I didn't mention prominence and oddity, a lot of stories did bring them up. Nonetheless, I believe that timeliness, impact, and proximity define "news" on the newscast.
Without the values stated, I doubt people will be interested. I believe they make up the majority of what's recognized as news, mainly the impact. Don't get me wrong. I also think the other four are essential, but during Noticias Univision, the news anchors frequently touched upon the ones mentioned.
